Give a big oldDune scream for Dune: Prophecy, which premiered on HBO this November. The new series is a prequel to Denis Villeneuve's films, focusing on the spooky and powerful Bene Gesserit sisterhood — you know, the witches with the pain box and the Voice? In a complete pivot away from that, The Sex Lives of College Girls premiered its third season this month, with a very reduced amount of Renée Rapp. A delicious new adaptation Spanish-language adaptation of Laura Esquivel's novelLike Water for Chocolatekicked off the month.
Other than that, November also sees the premieres of the Kiernan Shipka-Nico Hiraga rom-com Sweethearts; Surveilled, a new documentary from Ronan Farrow about the rise of commercial spyware; and Night Is Not Eternal, a documentary that explores political activism through the eyes of filmmaker Nanfu Wang. All of this is to say you'll have plenty to watch while you're on Thanksgiving break.
Below, we pulled together our picks for the month, plus a list of everything coming to HBO and Max in November.

The best new HBO and Max movies and shows in November
Max streams all HBO shows and movies when they debut on HBO. But not all shows and movies on Max make it to HBO. We'll designate Max exclusives where appropriate.
Like Water for Chocolate(Nov. 3, HBO Latino and Max)
Hopeless romantics, gastronomes, and foodplay fetishists can all share a table with this tasty Spanish-language adaptation of the acclaimed Laura Esquivel novel (and 1992 film) that blends love, food, and magical realism for a timeless story about the pursuit of happiness. Set during the Mexican Revolution,Like Water for Chocolatefollows a woman who finds solace in the kitchen when her traditional mother becomes an obstacle for being with her true love. This one's a real transporter, providing an entertaining and emotional escape from whatever you need to get away from. -Tim Surette[Trailer]
Dune: Prophecy (Nov. 17, HBO)
Despite being a pair of, essentially, very expensive and vibey arthouse pictures — I wouldn't dare refer to them as "movies" — Denis Villeneuve'sDunefilms have been equally successful with critics and audiences alike. It only makes sense, then, for Warner Bros. and HBO to try to capitalize on that success with a glossy spin-off series.Dune: Prophecy, which takes inspiration from Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's novelSisterhood of Dune, is set thousands of years prior to the movies and focuses on the origin of the Bene Gesserit, the witches whose machinations would eventually lead to the rise of Paul Atreides. StarringEmily Watson,Travis Fimmel,Olivia Williams,Mark Strong, andJodhi May,Dune: Prophecydidn't have the smoothest production — it's had four different showrunners, and reshoots and re-castings galore on top of that. While that's worrying, it wouldn't be the first time HBO managed to make something like this work —Game of Thronesactually had pretty similar issues before its first season, and, as we know, that ended up working out OK. -Phil Owen[Teaser] [Everything we know aboutDune: Prophecy]
The Sex Lives of College GirlsSeason 3 (Nov. 21, Max)
Are you ready to find out what a Renée Rapp-less version of The Sex Lives of College Girls looks like? Get ready, since the upcoming third season of the Mindy Kaling-created series will only feature Rapp in a "handful" of episodes, after which she will be exiting the series. At least the other three college girls — played by Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, and Alyah Chanelle Scott — are staying put as the group heads into their sophomore year. New parties, new faces, and new sexcapades are on the horizon. -Allison Picurro [Trailer]
